Sri Mariamman

This temple was built in 1827 by an associate of Sir Stamford Raffles and is the oldest Hindu temple in the country. It is open daily during the mornings and afternoons and is popular for weddings.

The present structure showcases amazing sculptures and frescoes from the Dravidian style from southern India. The original structure built in 1927 was a small hut.

The best time to view the temple is during October of November when the fire walking festival called 'Thimithi' is occurring. During this period you will see followers walk barefoot over hot coals. This ritual is dedicated to the goddess 'Droba-Devi'.

The pyramid shaped temple adorned with brightly coloured deities can only be entered barefoot and is close to nearby Jamae Mosque. Goddess Mariamman who the temple was named after was known for curing epidemics including cholera, chicken pox and small pox.

This temple is close to the Raffles and Outram Park MRT stations and was declared a national monument in 1973. You also should ring the bell on entering and leaving the temple to inform the gods of your arrival and departure.
