Local Transport Tips

There are many types of local transport options in Singapore. They include:

MRT

The Mass Rapid Transport Network is a series of latest generation air conditioned trains that network the island of Singapore.

A one day pass which entitles you to 12 individual trips costs only S$10 and can be used in conjunction with the Bus Network.

Buses

Buses are the main form of local transport for Singapore. They are very frequent and go to all areas of Singapore. There are normal buses which mainly local residents use and then there are two tourist base buses.

The first in the Singapore Hop-On Bus. This bus costs
S$3 a day for all Singapore and Silk Air Airline passengers. Other passengers can also use this bus for only S$6 a
day for adults and S$4 a day for children. There is no cost for Singapore Stopover Holiday customers to use this service and all routes are based around the main tourist
and shopping districts.

Taxis

All taxis are air conditioned and have a low priced fare structure. Traveling from Changi Airport to the City
normally costs S$17 - S$22 depending on your destination. A surcharge exists from Changi Airport for all fares which costs S$5 Friday to Sunday from 5pm to 12 midnight.
This surcharge costs S$3 for all other times.

You can also expect a small delay in getting into a taxi from most large shopping centres during the afternoon peak hour rush.

River Taxis

River taxis are used by locals and tourists alike along the Singapore River. The main ports to embark and disembark are Boat and Clarke Quays.

Trishaws

These are for tourists only and are based around the
Raffles Hotel Area. They were the original taxi before the
car became the main form of transport.

EZ-Link

Both the MRT and Bus Network uses the new EZ-Link Smart Card. Costing an initial S$15 with a non refundable fee of S$5, this card is simply placed on a specific area when entering a train station or bus. This card can actually be left in your wallet or purse and just moved over the area for scanning. Your cost and available balance is then
shown on the digital screen. This is a rechargeable card
and can be topped up at any bus and MRT ticket office.
